MPL and its Zaytoun branch hold a selected collection of books, reference works, and audiovisual materials in the form of VCRs, audiocassettes and audio CD's, as well as multimedia items. Both the main library and its branch subscribe to a number of newspapers and general magazines that enjoy great readership among their members.

The total target of holdings of the main library are around 135,000 items of various information media that were previously referred to. The Zaytoun branch target of holds around 33,000 items.

These items cover the spectrum of non-specialized human knowledge. Special care is taken to make sure that the number of items dedicated to children and youth would be nearly equal to that dedicated to adults. Care is also taken with respect to the prevailing percentage of Arabic language materials, compared to the overall library holdings (this should not be less that 80%). then, the maximum number of acquired copies from the same title should not exceed six copies.
Selection of the various materials is performed according to the "annual collection development plan," which is based on the "collection development policy" that is followed by the library. Both the plan and the policy in MPL are based on the users' interests, which are measured through the following means:

  • Circulation statistics
  • Readership tendencies inside the library.
  • Results of analyzing the users' interests' questionnaires.
  • Direct requests from the users.
  • Direct interaction between the users and the library staff.
  • Worn out items (due to the great demand for them).
  • Current events on the national and international levels.
  • Works of literary, cultural and scientific icons.
In preparing the annual collection development plan, the following is also taken into consideration:
  • The Library's "Three-Year Business Plan," and the financial allotments in the yearly budgets.
  • Discarded items, in terms of numbers and subject areas.
  • Proportion of the adult's materials to those pertaining to children and youth.
  • Proportion of materials in Arabic language to those in other foreign languages.
  • An adequate number of copies, with a maximum . of six copies for any single title.
The Library Director prepares the collection development plan, which is then approved by MPL Board of Directors.
