Organization
of the Library Holdings:

- The

-
It uses the Anglo-American Cataloguing
Rules, 2nd edition (AACR2),
which are compatible with the International
Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD)
and the Machine-Readable Cataloguing Rules (MARC).
The bibliographic data description used in the
library includes the following MARC fields:
|
-
The
Library's Adults Division uses the Dewey
Decimal
Cataloguing
system (DDC)
to organize its holdings. According to this
system, the spectrum of human knowledge is
divided into ten major categories. Following
is a description of the names of those categories,
along with the classification numbers that
designate them:
|
|
Each of these
categories is divided into ten additional divisions,
which are further divided into other subdivisions,
and so forth until the minutest subjects are reached.
A decimal number designates each subject. Books
may be retrieved in the Adults Division through
their Call Number, which is composed of the corresponding
Dewey classification number, in addition to two
letters of the alphabet (the first letter of the
author's name, and the first letter of the book
title). Great
consideration is taken to form various "Interest
Collections." An
Interest Collection includes books that address
some specific topic, which is selected such as
it would comply with the users' needs.
|
-
Books
in the Children and Youth Division are subdivided
according to the following age categories (3-6,
7-10, 11-15). This Division employs a special
system for organizing its book collection; namely,
through the use of a number of subject entries,
which include:
Linguistic Concepts, Mathematical Concepts,
Scientific Concepts, Stories (Arabic-English-French-German),
Poetry & Songs, Theater, Simplified Sciences,
The World Around Us, Games & Entertainment,
History, Famous Personalities, Science, Hobbies,
Arts, Handicraft, Countries of the World, Customs
& Traditions, Sports, Religious Education,
Languages.
-
Children
information media in Zaytoun
Branch Library are organized according to
the same system used in the children's library,
through a special arrangement that uses the
following subject entries:
Religions (Islam,
Christianity,
and other religions), Household Education
(Knitting, Cooking, Home Economics), Health
(Nutrition, Medical Literacy), Arts and Decoration
(Decoration, Drawing, Handicrafts, Ornamentation,
Sculpture), Celebrities, Sports & Games
(Physical Fitness, Entertaining Games, Intelligence
Games), Languages and Computer, Social Subjects,
Politics and Economics, Agriculture World
and Botany, Animal World and Birds, Behavioral
Sciences (Personality, Success, Children Rearing
and Upbringing, Dreams, Psychological Problems),

-
E-points:

various electronic information sources pertaining
to some specific subject area, and making
them available through a personal computer
located between the print materials.
-
Digital
Library: A number of digital sources are available
through the MPL
Website on the Internet. These include recordings

Automated
Search and Users Services:
MPL is
using the Integrated Automated System for Libraries
(UNICORN), which
is a multilingual, international standard system
that enables the use of Arabic
language along with English language. The system
provides a number of office functions and applications,
such as acquisitions, cataloguing, periodicals
and reports management, the most important of
which is the searching capability of the online
library catalogue, which is known by the acronym
"OPAC."
The user
may access the online library catalogue from inside
the library or from anywhere in the world through
the MPL
Website at: www.mpl.org.eg
Usually,
a searcher would use the library catalogue to
locate any of the following: A specific title,
a work by a specific author, the works available
in the library by a specific author, the various
media available on a specific topic, etc.
The searcher
writes the required term in the relevant search
space. The term could be either a Keyword, a Subject
heading, an Author name, the Title of the work,
the Publishing data, or the Classification number.
The advanced search option makes use of the Boolean
logic operators (AND, OR, NOT) and other more
complicated operators.
After
keying in the search term(s) and executing the
search request, a brief bibliographic list of
available materials appears on the screen, including
the item's call number, title, and author name,
as well as information on the item's circulation
status, and when it is due back to library. In
case the full bibliographic record of the item
is selected, the remaining data will appear on
the screen, which include the edition number,
imprint data (i.e. place of publication, publisher's
name, and publication date), series title, location
of the item (Main or Branch Library, or both),
subject headings relevant to the item, number
of copies available, and the circulation status
for each copy.
The item's
Call Number is considered the principal piece
of information required to locate the item on
the library shelves. This number may take different
forms:
|
|
1. Call number
+ two alphabetical letters representing the first
letter of the author's name, and the first letter
of the book's title: This is used for the information
media that are arranged on the library shelves
according to Dewey Decimal system, as in the Adults
Division in the Main Library.
2. Subject
Entries: This is used in case of the information
media that are displayed on the library shelves
according to their subject entries, as in the
Children Division and Zaytoun Branch.
3. Age Groups:
As in the Children Division in both the Main and
Branch Library. In this case, the subject area
of the item in question must be known.
4. Serial number
that is preceded by the item's code: As in the
case of audiovisual and multimedia materials.
Services available
to the users through the automated system include
the following:
|
-
Graphic
Search Guide (Find it Fast): Assists in conducting
a quick search through the use of thumbnail
images representing a number of main subject
categories and their subdivisions. The search
is executed upon clicking on the relevant image
icon.
-
Need Materials:
Enables library members to request the purchase
of new materials or increase the number of copies
available for a particular item.
- Knowledge
Portal: Provides accessibility to a number of
international information resources from the
library end.
-
My Account:
Enables a library member to review and check
his/her library account / change the password
/ extend the loan period / change the mailing
address.
-
Contact
Us: Enables library members to send their queries
or suggestions electronically to the library,
and receive the corresponding replies.
- Users services
available through the system include as well
a highlight of the items with the highest circulation
rate.
In order to
make use of these services, a password should
be collected from the Circulation Division, on
the library's first floor.

The
"Reading For All Festival":
The
"Reading For All Festival" is considered
one of the important cultural projects that was
launched by Mrs.
Suzanne
Mubarak,
and is held every year under her auspices during
the students summer vacation, from June 15 to
September 15 of each year. During the festival,
cultural activities directed to children and youth
are intensified, and new works pertaining to "The
Family's Library" project are published.
In fact, thousands of libraries and millions of
Egyptian
families benefit from this latter project, which
provides an opportunity to acquire important works
by renowned writers and icons of culture and intellectual
thinking that cover different fields of knowledge
at a symbolic price. During the festival, all
segments of the Egyptian
people are encouraged to read and acquire knowledge
under a variety of constructive mottos, such as
"Read For Your Child."
In view of the big success that this festival
has achieved on the national level for more than
