President
Mohamed
Hosni
Mubarak
officially inaugurated the Library on Monday,
March
21, 1995, in the presence of the Egyptian
First
Lady,
the esteemed Mrs.
Suzanne
Mubarak,
The
Chairperson
Of The
German
Bundestag,
The
German
Minister
Of
Foreign
Affairs,
Mrs
and Mr.
Reinhardl
Mohn,
President
of the German
"Bertelsmann
Foundation"
, Ambassador Abdel-Raouf
El-Reedy,
the Library's
Chairman
Of The
Board,
the German
Ambassador
in Cairo,
as well as a large number of Ministers
and renowned public figures.
The
Mubarak
Public
Library
(MPL)
is considered one of the most important pioneering
projects on the Egyptian
cultural scene. This
achievement was the product of a joint international
Egyptian-German
cooperation between three parties: The
"Integrated
Care
Society,"
headed by the esteemed Mrs.
Suzanne
Mubarak;
the Egyptian
Ministry
of Culture,
represented in the "Cultural
Development
Fund;"
and the "Bertelsmann
Foundation."
The
MPL's
philosophy is based on the idea that the library is
a living reality that interacts with the public, and
that it constitutes the foundation for the cultural
structure of the society.
MPL
aims at encouraging people of all categories and age
groups to develop their reading habit, and make use
of the cultural and educational materials that are
available in the library; as well as developing and
updating these materials in order to satisfy the desires
and needs of its members. It also aims at providing
the tools and means for lifetime self-education.
Modern
technological developments have added a new aim to
the library objectives, for the purpose of enhancing
and developing computer and Internet usage skills
among the various categories of the society.
By
establishing other branch libraries, MPL
aims at spreading its services throughout the different
districts and localities of Greater Cairo. The
first MPL branch library was established in "Zaytoun"
district,
in Amireya,
northeast of Cairo.
It was opened in March
1999. Currently, MPL
is studying a project for establishing another branch
library in the "El-Zawya
El-Hamra"
region.
In
view of the distinguished experiences acquired by
the MPL
staff in the different administrative, technical,
and technological fields; and in order to broaden
the profit and gain from these expertise, the H.E.
Mrs.
Suzanne
Mubarak
has kindly called for the establishment of regional
libraries in all the governorates of Egypt
that would follow the model of, and operate the same
way as MPL,
for the objective of setting up a network of modern
public libraries in Egypt.
Ultimately, these libraries will be electronically
interconnected to form one network system that could
be accessable for all users. Mubarak
Public
Library
in Giza
will provide the required technical, training, and
performance evaluation consultancy work for these
libraries.
